The Acton School Committee, following many difficult hours of deliberations has approved the proposed school budget for the 2010-2011 year. At a recent meeting the Warrant and Finance Committee also met and made their recommendations for the school budget. A large percentage of the recommendations that they have provided would put the Acton School Department in violation of legal contracts. We regret that these recommendations for the most part were not publicly discussed in their workshop meetings, and that the material that the School Department supplied for them was not given credibility in their deliberations. We also regret that with one exception, only one member of the Warrant and Finance Committee attended the School Committee budget workshops, in which all details, needs, and contractual issues were discussed. At our initial meeting with the Warrant and Finance Committee, we presented them with a sheet which showed the deep cuts that have been made in the past three years of budget deliberations. These cuts total more than $550,000. and include the following:
- elimination of the summer school program for regular ed. Students
- elimination of the activity bus for high school students
- reduction in stipends for co-curricular and extra-curricular positions
- capped tuition for students attending private high schools
- elimination of four full time teaching positions (two for the 2010-11 year)
- elimination of two education technician positions for regular ed.
- reduction in the superintendent’s salary and benefits
- reduction of summer custodial hours
- elimination of a cafeteria position.

Below are budget recommendations sent by the Warrant and Finance Committee for the School Committee that were reviewed Tuesday March 9th 2010 6pm at the school.
We greatly appreciate the Acton community who attended and spoke out in support of the Acton Elementary School.
---
TO: Members of the Acton School Committee FROM: Members of the Acton Warrant and Finance Committee RE: Recommendations for Budget - Fiscal year 2010-2011
After dozens of hours of meetings, workshops, as well as individual research, deliberations and calculations, the Warrant and Finance Committee has concluded that the proposed budget submitted by the School Committee is not affordable to the taxpayers of the Town of Acton.
Furthermore, after consultation with the Department of Education n'Augusta, as well as with neighboring school districts, we feel strongly that rather than terminating any teaching staff positions, it would be more equitable to suggest that all teaching and administrative staff consider a three percent (3%) reduction in their respective compensation. lt is further recommended that due to duplication of effort and responsibilities in some departments in support staff and administrative staff, we recommend the termination of some position.

In the Sanford News, Sanford High School Honor Roll Second Quarter, 2009-10.
A high number of our Acton students have obtained Highest Honors, Honors, and Honorable Mention. Out of the 126 students we send to Sanford High School 53 of our Acton students were on Highest Honors, Honors, and Honorable Mention.
That is 42%.
Now that is something to be proud of! It couldn't have been accomplished without the support of the people of Acton Elementary School. |
